About Midsumma Festival

Midsumma, Melbourne's annual LGBTIQ+ Arts and Cultural Festival, is a celebration and showcase of arts and cultural events for and by members of the LGBTIQ artistic community. Midsumma Festival works year round to provide artists with support and tools to create, present and promote their work with its primary activity an annual multi arts festival presented over three weeks from mid-January to February each year.

Midsumma is recognised nationally as one of Australia's largest LGBTIQ cultural events, featuring 130 events each year with involvement by over 500 artists in over 85 different venues across Melbourne and wider Victoria to audiences of approximately 200,000 each year. The Festival also produces a number of key public events central to the community's visibility and sense of celebration and pride. Midsumma Festival has been held annually since 1988 and has become a significant attraction on the State's and national festival calendar.

Midsumma Festival brings a diverse mix of artists, performers, communities and audiences together under a single umbrella for a celebration and innovative presentation of queer arts and culture. The diverse festival program is made up of a wide range of events and activities including visual art, theatre, spoken word, cabaret, film, live music, parties, sport, social events and public forums.

Finance and Administration Manager

An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Finance and Administration Manager to join our Midsumma Festival team.

Midsumma Festival is Victoria's premier LGBTIQA+ arts and cultural festival, for and by communities who live with shared experiences around diverse gender and sexuality. Midsumma also has significant programs aimed at disability cultures, indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse programming. With a current turnover of $1.5M and attendances of 265,000 per year, Midsumma Festival features up to 180 events in venues across Melbourne and wider Victoria. Midsumma works year-round to provide artists and culture-makers with support and development opportunities to create, present and promote their work.

We are looking for an experienced financial manager with skills in all areas of financial and administrative management. The role will work closely with the Chief Executive and Board on strategies, funding and reporting requirements as well as systems and procedures to assist us to maximise opportunities. FT salary range $68-$75k plus Super depending upon applicant experience. Flexibility exists for role to be worked part time (.8)

Digital Services Work Placement

Midsumma is calling out for applications from early-career digital service workers seeking a learning experience they can sink their teeth into.

Help deliver one of Australia's greatest LGBTQIA+ events, gain valuable work experience and grow your networks. Midsumma is Australia's leading queer arts and cultural organisation, for people who identify as LGBTQIA+. We are a champion of queer cultures, conversations and events. With the primary festival held in summer each year, we work year-round to support artists to create, present and promote their work.

We are looking for expressions of interest from applicants who are interested in providing ongoing assistance with maintaining the midsumma.org.au website and other online platforms. There would be an expectation that the applicant would assist with, or perform, specific tasks within clearly defined timeframes, but there would also be considerable scope for working on collaborative development projects where the applicant would be heavily involved in the design and delivery of the project, and have a great deal of flexibility around the deadlines.

The placement is an unpaid volunteer role, however, you will be granted an allowance of $500 negotiable depending on duration and situation, to assist with covering costs incurred during your placement.

Expressions of Interest: Midsumma Board Member – Treasurer

We are looking for expressions of interest from suitably skilled and interested people for the Treasurer position on our Volunteer Board to assist Midsumma in its next exciting phase of development. The Midsumma Board provides excellent governance, strategic guidance and networking capabilities for our organisation. The position will be formally appointed based on Midsumma Festival's constitution.

You are:
  1. Energetic and engaging with strong community liaison skills
  2. Passionate about inclusion and diversity
  3. An experienced Financial Controller (or similar position) with CPA/CA qualifications
  4. Strong at networking and advocating for the LGBTQIA+ communities and are comfortable leveraging your contacts to help fundraising
  5. Have strong networks within the government, business and /or philanthropy sectors
  6. Experienced with board level positions (not-for-profit or corporate)
In addition, other desirable characteristics include:
  1. Proven experience in Board governance
  2. Experience within the arts and culture industry
  3. Strong existing networks within government, community or corporate sectors

Expressions of Interest: Program Coordinator

Expressions of interest are now open for a Program Coordinator role. Working closely with Midsumma's Program Manager, the Program Coordinator, in consultation with other Midsumma staff and external consultants, is responsible for the effective delivery of Midsumma Pathways: mentoring and workshop program for up to 10 LGBTQIA+ artists living with disability running from May to August 2018.

The Program Coordinator may be responsible for assisting with other event and artist development programming requirements throughout the duration of their contract.

The Role is a part time fixed-term project-based contract related to the delivery of selected Midsumma artist development programs. Where funding arrangements change in the future there may be scope for the role to be continued with programming within Midsumma Festival.

Expressions of Interest: Social Media Team Leader

Expressions of interest are now open for a savvy social media team leader to coordinate Midsumma Festival social media activity from 8 January until 6 February.

Who are we looking for?
  • You have evidence of your own success in promoting events on social media and/or have worked professionally in marketing and social media fields.
  • You know your # from your @ and the best time to use it.
  • You are available to come into the Midsumma office (Bourke St) on some days – and work remotely at other times – from early January to 6 February.
  • You are comfortable with some image sourcing and resizing without necessarily being a graphic designer.
  • You are up to date with Melbourne's LGBTQIA+ culture and activities generally.
  • You might be considered a responsible voice for our LGBTQIA+ communities
  • Pretty organised? Happy to work with scheduled and reactive content?
  • Need a little cash to help you through summer?
  • Reliability is a must.

Midsumma Work Placements

Midsumma is calling out for applications from early-career arts workers seeking a learning experience they can sink their teeth into.

Successful applicants will help deliver one of Australia's greatest LGBTQIA+ events, gain valuable work experience and grow their networks. Midsumma Work Placements are short-term and volunteer-based, and open to students and non-students in the areas of Programming and Event Management, Marketing and Publicity, Production and Arts Administration.

Midsumma Festival is delivered by a team of professional arts workers and event managers. You will be paired up with a staff member who will manage your tasks and support you in your career learning while with Midsumma.

Midsumma Work Placements commence in November 2017 and run until mid-February 2018. Placements are part-time, with hours increasing over the duration of the festival period (14 January – 4 February 2018). During the festival period, working outside standard business hours will be required. Start date and hours are negotiable.

Placements are unpaid volunteer roles, however, you will be granted a small allowance to assist with covering costs incurred during your placement.

Finance and Office Operations Manager

This senior role is the day to day financial controller and administration manager for the Midsumma Festival Inc. and is responsible for the coordination and day to day smooth running of the festival’s office and administrative environment; to best support the Chief Executive and Board to meet the artistic and cultural objectives of the festival in a progressive and sustainable way.

Such support is critical in the lead up to and throughout the festival delivery period, and during evaluation and planning processes for each festival. The position is responsible for the operations of the accounting systems, up to date financial forecasting and general reporting to funding / governance bodies, general office administrative systems and processes including IT and communications systems (ICT). Instrumental to the role is the ability to assess, develop, implement and maintain systems and processes that are consistent with budgetary, corporate governance and reporting requirements, the festival’s Strategic Overview and general operational requirements.

The role will also support operational delivery of the festival alongside all staff of Midsumma Festival.

The role requires an outgoing, enthusiastic, highly organised and dedicated person who works well as part of a team. As part of a committed but small team, the role is a hands-on delivery position crucial to the success of Midsumma Festival and the ability of the festival to achieve its potential.

Volunteers Coordinator

Midsumma Festival is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated person to undertake the coordination of all elements of the Midsumma Festival Volunteers Program. They will work closely with the Midsumma Festival Production Manager and Midsumma Program Manager on logistical delivery of a range of activities and events to assist the success of the festival and helping ensure the day to day smooth running of these programs in the lead up to and throughout the 2018 Festival. The position will coordinate administrative systems and processes, undertake general communications as well as assisting with the coordination of meetings, forums, information sessions, and events as may be required in the preparation and delivery across relevant festival activities. The role is also ‘hands on’ throughout the festival and events within it. Dates for the 2018 Midsumma Festival are 14 January to 4 February 2018.

A core component of the role will be recruitment of volunteers, induction and briefing of volunteers, rostering of registered volunteers to best meet the needs of all aspects of the festival, and communications with such volunteers and Midsumma project managers to ensure that the festival is able to fulfill volunteer requirements of the festival throughout the festival delivery period.

Production and Events Manager

Midsumma Festival is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated person to undertake the planning, coordination and delivery of all production and logistical aspects for our summer 2018 Festival including large scale outdoor events Midsumma Carnival and Midsumma Pride March.

The Festival’s Production and Events Manager will scope and manage all festival event delivery requirements. The position is a hands-on role and will be directly involved in the day to day delivery of events.

The applicant must be available for full time work from approximately September 2017 until at least mid-February 2018 and available for part time work from late July or August 2017. Exact hours will be negotiated with the successful applicant and certain flexibility can be provided.
