The most fabulous queer-day-outPresented by Midsumma Festival
Don't miss Melbourne's most famous family-friendly community day that kicks off summer's beloved three-week Midsumma Festival season. Midsumma Carnival will serve-up a tasting plate of performances and personalities from the festival program – in one giant showcase – with something for everyone.
Check out sports displays, get pooch-smooched at the famous Dog Show, see some amazing queer creations at the new Fashion Design Competition, or test out your favourite songs in the Lipsync Limelight competition.
Food trucks, bars and stalls galore, all top-full of treats to keep you hydrated, fed and in the community spirit.
There'll be an under 18s area hosted by Australia's largest youth organisation Minus18; a rest zone; and Midsumma Carnival's first-ever tactile installation by Slow Art Collective in collaboration with Description Victoria – for those that want to feel the community vibe across all of their senses.
This year we'll have a cloakroom, located beside the main Information and Ticketing point, open until 10:30pm. Bring the kids, the sunscreen and a picnic lunch if you like – but please don't bring any glass containers or bottles with you! We'd hate to see paws, feet and knees coming out a little worse for wear after a lovely day on the grassy knolls of Alexandra Gardens.

How do I stay cool at Midsumma Carnival?
As Midsumma Carnival is held in the middle of Summer it is important to remember to:
- Slip on a shirt
- Slop on sunscreen (throughout the day) - free sunscreen available at the Information Tents
- Slap on a hat (or bring a carry umbrella)
- Hydrate regularly (with free water stations onsite).
Due to the natural structure of Alexandra Gardens, shade is limited and in high demand.
Are pets allowed?
Pets are welcomed at Carnival. Please note that the event is held in an outdoor space in the middle of summer. As there is limited natural shade available we highly recommend taking the necessary precautions to ensure your pet is protected from the heat and stays hydrated.
With all that in mind, the safest place from the heat for your pet is at home.
Is Midsumma Carnival family friendly?
Midsumma Carnival is a family friendly event with entertainment for all ages, including performances, a dog show, delicious food options, and interactive activities from our lovely stall holders. In 2018 we are introducing a new Families Precinct, located at the St Kilda Rd end of the park.
At 6pm, Carnival transforms into T-Dance, which is recommended for 16+.
Is there an area specifically for Under 18s?
Midsumma and Minus 18, Australia's largest youth-led network for gay, bi, lesbian and trans teens, have teamed up to create an alcohol and drug free zone for young people. The Under 18 area will include a line-up of DJs, and roving Minus 18 social workers to generate a safe and fun environment.
Midsumma Carnival is held at Alexandra Gardens (opposite Arts Centre Melbourne), which is a short walk from Flinders Street Station. As parking is limited, we recommend taking a train to Flinders Street Station or any tram along Swanston Street.
