That's My Man: Nathan J. Smith
That's My Man: Time to put on our big boy boots and see what it really means to be a man.Presented by GoGo Art Series
"What does it mean to be a man?" It's a tough question to answer, one that Nathan J. Smith just couldn't fathom on his own and as such turned to six of the most life changing and influential men he had ever met.
In my life I have battled with and at times been crippled by the adversities of my sexuality, mental illness, addiction and trauma. It was only through the help, love, compassion and shared experience of my father, ex-boyfriend, lawyer, sponsor, counsellor and close friend that I was able not only to get through them but also rise above them.
When this project first began, it was merely a means of meditative reflection and desperate search for peace and acceptance. Drawing was a way of clearing the chaos and pain that had crept into my heart and mind. Gradually, these drawings found their way to being an homage to these incredible men and the power that comes with one man helping another. As it progressed, I found myself at yet another crossroad in my life. One that would challenge my identity and core values. So, I turned to those that had never steered me wrong before.
So what happened? Well, not even one of them said the same thing. They each brought their own life struggles to the table in which their status as a man had been defined.
In simplicity, this exhibition represents not only my own journey of self-discovery but also the truth about men; we only reach a point in which to define ourselves when we share our hopes, fears, insecurities and ideals as one.
