Au Cause Célèbre
A tragically romantic melodramaPresented by Ms CeCe Rockefeller
Wed – Sat 9pm
Duration: 60 mins
Fresh from a premiere season at Melbourne Fringe, emergent cabaret queen Ms CeCe Rockefeller brings her sophomore work of oversaturated, tragically romantic melodrama to Midsumma with a high-gloss finish.
Recounting a first love that unfolds in the wake of her sister's disappearance, Au Cause Célèbre discovers a young Cecilia with stars in her eyes, carried off on a whirlwind romance destined for disgrace, heartbreak and devastation.
An episode lifted from a truly fantastical autobiography, Ms Rockefeller's original text is woven through an eclectic pop repertoire – including songs from Solange, ANOHNI and Lianne La Havas – with arrangements for keys and cello by award-winning composer Shanon D Whitelock in collaboration with featured instrumentalist Claire Abougelis.
With a voice that has been described as "a glorious fusion of Kate Bush and James Blake," Ms CeCe Rockefeller captures the profound vulnerability of being in love - and losing it! - furnishing a space for sincerity and sentimentality on the contemporary drag scene.
'Embodying the prim elegance and practiced restraint of 1950's social and sexual repression, CeCe drifts from room to room... a lofty, alcoholic Julie Andrews, rummaging through artefacts of her bygone glory days' – Jack Beeby, AussieTheatre
Ms CeCe Rockefeller originated at The Butterfly Club, in "Estate of Affairs", April 2016. Creator Christopher Fieldus graduated from the VCA (Master of Dramaturgy) in 2015, and is currently a participant in the Midsumma Futures program.

The funereal aesthetic permeates through all of it. Mini-rituals are scattered along the way, often lasting just a few seconds...
