Midsumma Carnival & T Dance

Melbourne is coming up rainbows

The 30th Midsumma Festival opens with an all-day-and-night party-in-the-park at Melbourne's Alexandra Gardens.

Bask in the sun to a buzzing collection of live music, performance and sneak-peek acts from the Festival to come. Midsumma Carnival's Main Stage will be hosted by home-grown Melbourne comedy duo, The Sparrow Men (Marcus Willis and Andy Balloch) as well as the iconic and irreverent Dolly Diamond. Stand out acts include sultry songs from alt-folk singers Kerryn Fields and Little Wise, interactive dance workshop with All The Queens Men, special-guest performance from the cast of Kinky Boots, electro-darkwave beats from queer DIY band Togetherapart, a sneek-peek treat performance from internationally renowned cabaret artist Jonny Woo, and much more. See the full line-up here.

See yourself on stage? The Festival-favourite Dog Show returns so register on the day to show-off your pooch for your chance to win. Or give your mouth a workout with Lipsync Limelight, a brand new 2017 drag competition for queens, kings, bios, new-drag performers, aficionados or drag virgins (bring a track or Spotify request and register on the day).

It's a day filled with yummy eats, fresh brews and bevs, family-fun activities, community stalls and the best in queer sports presented by Team Melbourne. And if you're under 18, chill with Minus 18 in our Under 18 zone to a line-up of DJs featuring Mladen, Westgate Fridge, Brooke Powers and Dee*liscious.

As the sun goes down, Midsumma Carnival turns into T Dance. This is an ostentatious and outrageous dance party, and 2017 will see the most diverse line-up in Midsumma history. Underground sensation Brooke Powers will open T Dance. As a trans DJ, Powers has generated a cult following with her love of Garage House and old-school vinyl. Emerging female DJ duo Miicha, are the new kids on the queer block and play T Dance off the back of winning Your Shot 2016. TFG joins the line up as one of Melbourne's favourite gay techno scene DJs. And decolonize the dance floor as powerhouse artist and DJ, Wahe, closes the night.

T Dance includes a guest appearance from high-energy and high-camp dance performers YUMMY, and will be emceed by the host of JOY 94.9's Counter Cultured program, Dylan Adler.
