Meet Gabriel - Programming, Summer Work Placement

Gabriel has two big questions on his mind: Medicine? or Muso? Finishing off his music degree, and electrified by the arts and all things Billy Joel, we think a summer work placement at Midsumma will hold all the answers for this creative soul (we hope!).

Meet Gabriel - Programming, Summer Work Placement 2021-22

Q: Describe yourself in three words:
Music Nerd Billy-Joel-Wannabe

Q: What were you doing before Midsumma?
Studying (and still am) a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. I’m heading into my 4th year of what was supposed to be a 2 year degree (thank you Covid), but with the extra amount of people I have been able to interact and play music with, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Q: What drew you to working in the arts industry
I was sitting behind my keyboard during the first evening of my High School’s production of Grease. I was 1st Keyboard, and just played an absolutely BANGING solo, and I had never felt more nervous, excited, and alive. I’ve been trying to pursue that feeling ever since.

Q: Where is your favourite place in the world?
It’s either Angers or Landerneau (Both in France). I have family there, and my memories of these places are amongst the best and most joyful and boisterous in my life.

Q: What is your must-see production/show/event of the year?
The Cat Empire’s final original-line-up show at Sidney Myer Music Bowl. They are my absolute favourite band. I can’t not go. I’ll be there at the very front. The VERY front!

Q: What keeps you awake at night?
5am start at the pool I work at (I can never sleep knowing I NEED TO SLEEP ASAP)

Q: What is your favourite song and why?
There are a few, but I think “Vienna” by Billy Joel has always resonated with me. I don’t know what the whole song is about, and that doesn’t really matter. That song has always re-assured me that there is no rush to being ‘settled’, or ‘successful’. I have to enjoy where I am now, and make the most of it. It’s a song that has a lot of sentimental value to me, and just always calms me down whenever I have anxiety about my future

Q: What gets you out of bed on a Sunday morning?
My cat scratching because he is a hungry boi.

Q: What is something surprising that not many people know about you?
I can’t decide whether I want to pursue music/arts or medicine for the rest of my life (It’s a big struggle, believe me). So watch me try to do both, and the rocky road that follows.
