Meet Emily Rose, content creator and drag super fan
Emily Rose has joined the Midsumma team this year as our Social Media and Content Coordinator for Midsumma Festival 2023, an industry 180 after spending the last five years staring at spreadsheets. If you've been to a drag show in Melbourne you've most likely crossed paths with Emily Rose (she's easy to spot in a crowd!).
Q: Describe yourself in three words:
Opinionated, silly, and pink.
Q: What were you doing before Midsumma?
For the past five years I have been working in the kid’s toy industry! I have worked in both buying offices for major retailers and in sales for toy manufacturers.
Q: What is the best part of your role at Midsumma?
Feeling like I’m contributing to something important for our community.
Q: What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?
I am a huge drag fan so most nights you’ll find me watching the divas perform. Drag is where music, fashion, comedy, and gender expression meet – it’s everything I love.
Q: What is your favourite song and why?
Anything from Glee. I’m on a one-woman mission to convince Melbourne that the Glee version is always better.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
When I was in the toy industry there was a day that I was incredibly anxious and stressed, and my boss said to me “Emily, we’re not saving lives here, we just buy s*** and sell s***”. He meant that nothing is that serious and that’s the advice that helps me sleep at night.
Q: What are some emerging trends you have seen this year in the Melbourne arts industry?
I'm seeing communities break out and create their own spaces, often to huge success. There's been some really exciting new events catering for performers and audiences who are often overlooked at mainstream queer events. In turn, this is bringing more diverse performance to major stages.
