About Midsumma Festival

Midsumma, Melbourne's annual LGBTIQ+ Arts and Cultural Festival, is a celebration and showcase of arts and cultural events for and by members of the LGBTIQ artistic community. Midsumma Festival works year round to provide artists with support and tools to create, present and promote their work with its primary activity an annual multi arts festival presented over three weeks from mid-January to February each year.

Midsumma is recognised nationally as one of Australia’s largest LGBTIQ cultural events, featuring 130 events each year with involvement by over 500 artists in over 85 different venues across Melbourne and wider Victoria to audiences of approximately 200,000 each year. The Festival also produces a number of key public events central to the community’s visibility and sense of celebration and pride. Midsumma Festival has been held annually since 1988 and has become a significant attraction on the State’s and national festival calendar.

Midsumma Festival brings a diverse mix of artists, performers, communities and audiences together under a single umbrella for a celebration and innovative presentation of queer arts and culture. The diverse festival program is made up of a wide range of events and activities including visual art, theatre, spoken word, cabaret, film, live music, parties, sport, social events and public forums.

Finance and Office Operations Manager

This senior role is the day to day financial controller and administration manager for the Midsumma Festival Inc. and is responsible for the coordination and day to day smooth running of the festival’s office and administrative environment; to best support the Chief Executive and Board to meet the artistic and cultural objectives of the festival in a progressive and sustainable way.

Such support is critical in the lead up to and throughout the festival delivery period, and during evaluation and planning processes for each festival. The position is responsible for the operations of the accounting systems, up to date financial forecasting and general reporting to funding / governance bodies, general office administrative systems and processes including IT and communications systems (ICT). Instrumental to the role is the ability to assess, develop, implement and maintain systems and processes that are consistent with budgetary, corporate governance and reporting requirements, the festival’s Strategic Overview and general operational requirements.

The role will also support operational delivery of the festival alongside all staff of Midsumma Festival.

The role requires an outgoing, enthusiastic, highly organised and dedicated person who works well as part of a team. As part of a committed but small team, the role is a hands-on delivery position crucial to the success of Midsumma Festival and the ability of the festival to achieve its potential.

Midsumma Work Placements

Midsumma is calling out for applications from early-career arts workers seeking a learning experience they can sink their teeth into.

Successful applicants will help deliver one of Australia's greatest LGBTQIA+ events, gain valuable work experience and grow their networks. Midsumma Work Placements are short-term and volunteer-based, and open to students and non-students in the areas of Programming and Event Management, Marketing and Publicity, Production and Arts Administration.

Midsumma Festival is delivered by a team of professional arts workers and event managers. You will be paired up with a staff member who will manage your tasks and support you in your career learning while with Midsumma.

Midsumma Work Placements commence in November 2017 and run until mid-February 2018. Placements are part-time, with hours increasing over the duration of the festival period (14 January – 4 February 2018). During the festival period, working outside standard business hours will be required. Start date and hours are negotiable.

Volunteers Coordinator

Midsumma Festival is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated person to undertake the coordination of all elements of the Midsumma Festival Volunteers Program. They will work closely with the Midsumma Festival Production Manager and Midsumma Program Manager on logistical delivery of a range of activities and events to assist the success of the festival and helping ensure the day to day smooth running of these programs in the lead up to and throughout the 2018 Festival. The position will coordinate administrative systems and processes, undertake general communications as well as assisting with the coordination of meetings, forums, information sessions, and events as may be required in the preparation and delivery across relevant festival activities. The role is also ‘hands on’ throughout the festival and events within it. Dates for the 2018 Midsumma Festival are 14 January to 4 February 2018.

A core component of the role will be recruitment of volunteers, induction and briefing of volunteers, rostering of registered volunteers to best meet the needs of all aspects of the festival, and communications with such volunteers and Midsumma project managers to ensure that the festival is able to fulfill volunteer requirements of the festival throughout the festival delivery period.

Production and Events Manager

Midsumma Festival is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and dedicated person to undertake the planning, coordination and delivery of all production and logistical aspects for our summer 2018 Festival including large scale outdoor events Midsumma Carnival and Midsumma Pride March.

The Festival’s Production and Events Manager will scope and manage all festival event delivery requirements. The position is a hands-on role and will be directly involved in the day to day delivery of events.

The applicant must be available for full time work from approximately September 2017 until at least mid-February 2018 and available for part time work from late July or August 2017. Exact hours will be negotiated with the successful applicant and certain flexibility can be provided.
