In this self-portraiture workshop, join Luce Nguyễn-Hunt [Queer PHOTO - SURFACING] at Trocadero Projects to learn how to utilise playful and imaginative photo-making techniques to create your own lens or ‘gaze’ using craft materials, physically manipulating the colonial eye of the camera.
Hand-in-hand with guns and bibles, the camera was/is a crucial tool of Indigenous occupation, oppression and imperial violence.
Ethnographic photography has caged Indigenous bodies into a homogenous way-of-being, selling the false perception of primacy and inferiority to the Western world.
What does it mean to control what is seen and felt from both sides of the lens? What can emerge from this simple, yet powerful act of de-weaponizing the camera?
What should you bring?
- A camera (DSLR or iPhone)
- Note taking device
The event is free but capacity is limited so bookings are essential.
